Dog vest or raincoat: which does your dog need?

Choose a padded vest for cool walks when you want an extra layer. Choose a light raincoat for showers when you want a hood and rain coverage. Start with the weather, then compare your dog’s measurements with that product’s own chart.

For cool walks: the quilted vest

The Mitsi & Co Quilted Dog Vest has a padded lining and a polyester shell, with a zipper down the back. Nothing needs to go over your dog’s head. The shell is water-resistant for light drizzle. It isn’t a heavy-rain layer.

For showers: the hooded raincoat

The Mitsi & Co Hooded Dog Raincoat is a light polyester rain shell with mesh lining, a hood, reflective bars, a leash hole and velcro fastening. It is water-resistant, without a heavy-rain performance guarantee.

Do the vest and raincoat fit the same way?

No. A size letter on one is not a size recommendation for the other. Measure chest and back for the vest, and chest, back and neck for the raincoat. Compare those numbers with each chart in our dog jacket measuring and fit guide. Weight and breed can only narrow down a starting point.

What about a leash?

A matching reflective leash is an optional $15.00 add-on on either product page. It is 6 ft long. Reflective material does not glow in the dark. The vest’s leash rings are not a substitute for a properly fitted harness for a dog that pulls.

Measure with your dog standing

  1. Chest: around the widest part of the ribs, just behind the front legs. This is the measurement that matters most.
  2. Back: from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
  3. Neck: around the base of the neck, where the vest will sit. The vest chart does not list neck.

Breed and weight

A starting point only. Two dogs of the same breed and weight can need different sizes, so confirm with chest and back on the chart above.
